Case Study: Bio-Remediation of Maisaiah Nagar Lake by Magnatree Ventures Pvt. Ltd.

Introduction

Water bodies in India are increasingly facing pollution due to industrial discharge and domestic waste. One such affected site is Maisaiah Nagar Lake in Warangal. Magnatree Ventures Pvt. Ltd., a Mumbai-based biotech company specializing in bio-remediation and waste management, undertook a project to restore this lake using their innovative microbial consortium technology.

Problem Statement

Maisaiah Nagar Lake suffered from severe water pollution caused by continuous dumping of waste. The lake exhibited the following issues:

- Stagnant sewage water with a foul odor.

- High levels of debris and untreated sewage.

- Blackish water with high turbidity.

- Elevated levels of pollutants such as BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), TSS (Total Suspended Solids), and ammonia.

Project Implementation

Magnatree Ventures initiated a pilot project to treat the lake using their bio-remediation technology at no cost to the ASCI (Administrative Staff College of India), Warangal. The treatment process involved:

- Initial sampling and analysis of the water.

- Application of probiotic enzymes prepared in the lab with a cow dung base and enriched nutrient concoction.

- Monitoring the reaction of the enzymes with the contaminants in the water, resulting in the release of harmless gases and the reduction of pollutants.

Pre-Treatment Analysis

Initial water samples were collected and analyzed for six parameters:

- **pH:** 7.5

- **TSS:** 692 mg/L

- **Turbidity:** 750 NTU

- **COD:** 381 mg/L

- **BOD:** 112 mg/L

- **Ammonia:** 6.0 mg/L

Post-Treatment Results

After 15 days of enzyme spraying, significant improvements were observed in the water quality:

- **pH:** 6.88

- **TSS:** 65 mg/L

- **Turbidity:** 10 NTU

- **COD:** 149 mg/L

- **BOD:** 28 mg/L

- **Ammonia:** <1 mg/L

The reduction in pollutants demonstrated the efficacy of Magnatree Ventures' bio-remediation technology. The improvement in water quality was visibly noticeable, with reduced debris and odor, making the lake environment more pleasant for visitors and residents.

Conclusion

The successful restoration of Maisaiah Nagar Lake highlights the potential of Magnatree Ventures' microbial consortium technology in addressing water pollution issues. By reducing harmful pollutants and improving water quality, the company has demonstrated its commitment to creating a greener, safer, and cleaner environment. This project serves as a model for future bio-remediation efforts across India.
